Strategy Sunday.
A Church in the city, for the city
At Strategy Sunday on Sunday 29th September we shared how you can play your part where God is taking us. God’s given us a vision to not just be a church in the city but a church for the city, working to see his Kingdom advance in Manchester.
With a big vision like this we want to make really clear ways to get involved as God calls us to focus our first efforts in Moss Side where we are based. To get the full picture and be inspired for what you can do, we’d encourage you to listen to the message here. Here’s a short summary:
We spoke of three pillars where we’re focusing our attention: Relief, Renewal & Revival. We provide Relief by meeting immediate needs, Renewal is seeking deeper change by establishing relationships and Revival is our commitment to asking God for his Kingdom to come and expecting the extraordinary. As we get started, a lot of our work will be Relief work we hope that will lead to deeper Renewal opportunities as connections are made.

We’ve been told that residents want Moss Side Park (right next to our venue) to receive investment. This is a great place for us to begin to serve. We’re going to do regular litter picking as a way of being present in the area and to meet people, and will host a free Family Fun Day in May / June 2025 with bouncy castles, free food, face painting and lots more! We’ll need lots of help in the lead-up and volunteers on the day.

An area of big need in Moss Side is young men growing up without fathers present. For a while the Powerhouse have been wanting to help teenagers they know who are hungry for guidance, so we are going to collaborate to start Formation Mentoring. This ongoing mentoring programme is an opportunity for men from the church to spend regular time with teenagers who are wanting some positive input, invest in them over time and display something of the love of God. The commitment is just a couple of hours every month and this is for anyone over 18 to get involved in. If you express interest below, we’ll let you know more details - there will be training and you’ll get to have a taste of what it’s like before making any kind of decision.

Before anything else, Jesus tells us to pray for his Kingdom to come. It's not the only thing we should do, but it is something we must do. His invitation is to keep asking, keep seeking, keep knocking (Matt 7:7) and he will move. We believe the more we pray, the more we can expect to see his Kingdom in our city 'as it is in heaven' (Matt 6:10), so we're making lots of opportunities to pray.
We're making lots of regular opportunity for prayer (see below) and inviting the church across Moss Side to gather and offer a joint cry for God to move. In November & January we're taking the lead in joint worship & prayer evenings, hosted by St James across the road from us.
As we pray, we believe the Kingdom can break out in a moment. We want to be equipped to go out to boldly share our faith. We're hosting an Evangelism Training morning in November with Katherine & Jon Brown, and want to co-ordinate outreach & prayer walking groups to go out in Moss Side. Let us know below if you're interested and we'll connect you with others.
